Replacing an existing system
Do not size the replacement by the old tank.
Start again with the home: current hardness, household demand, plumbing conditions, and the result you actually want.

Confirm the problem
Hard water returning can point to an empty brine tank, a bypass left open, a control problem, resin exhaustion, or incorrect programming. A reading confirms whether hardness is reaching the home.

Recheck the household
Occupancy, bathrooms, fixtures, and peak water use may have changed since the previous unit was installed. The replacement should be sized for present conditions.

Inspect what can be reused
The existing loop, bypass, drain, electrical access, and installation space should be reviewed before they are assumed to fit a new system.

Compare operating behavior
A demand-initiated control regenerates from measured use. Ask for model-specific capacity, salt efficiency, water use, dimensions, warranty, and maintenance information in writing.
