Resin beads sit coated in sodium. Hard water runs down through them and the calcium and magnesium swap places with it — the mineral stays on the bead, the sodium leaves with the water. What comes out of the tank is soft.
A simplified cross-section: real systems add a backwash and a rinse either side of the brine draw, and the resin sits on a gravel bed around a riser tube. The trade itself is exactly this. EPA on cation-exchange softeners

01Mæla Measure
A hardness test gives a reading for the water actually arriving at your house, rather than an average for your zip code.
02Mýkja Soften
A correctly sized ion-exchange system pulls calcium and magnesium out before the water moves anywhere else in the house.
03Sjá Notice
Less mineral left behind where water dries or heats — on glass, on fixtures, inside the water heater.
Harka hardness
Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium — how much stone the water picked up on the way down. It is not a safety rating. Move the reading and watch what a gallon is actually carrying.

Salt Lake City’s 2025 report gives a range across sources, not one figure for every house — which is why the reading that matters is the one taken at your own tap. USGS hardness scale

Kerfið the system
A metered ion-exchange softener takes calcium and magnesium out at the main line, then schedules its own regeneration from measured household use rather than a fixed calendar. It softens water. It does not claim to filter contaminants — that is a different job, and sometimes a second device.
Leiðin the way
01 At your tap
We measure hardness where you actually use the water, and show you the number.
02 In writing
The system is matched to the household, the water use, and the reading — on paper.
03 One visit
A local installer connects and programs the system at the main line.
04 Before leaving
We test the softened water in front of you and show you the result.

Non-standard plumbing, new electrical work, unusual drainage, permits, or surface repair are quoted separately and in writing.

Uppruni origin
Hvítá means white river — meltwater carried from the glacier to the lowland, pale with the ground it crossed. It gave us a name and a standard: water should feel clean, quiet, and like nothing at all.
The knot is the other half. Iceland was settled by Norse and Gaelic people together, and interlace is the ornament they share — three strands crossing over and under without ever ending. It is also, exactly, a drawing of moving water.

Spurningar questions
Hardness is not a safety rating — it describes dissolved calcium and magnesium. Hvíta addresses scale and the way water behaves in a house. It makes no safety claim about municipal water.
No. A true ion-exchange softener removes hardness minerals. A filter targets specific sediment, tastes, odours or contaminants depending on its media. Plenty of houses want both, for different reasons.
The control records how much water has been used and regenerates when the system needs capacity back, instead of on a fixed schedule whether the water was used or not.
The system, a standard connection at an accessible main line, setup, and hardness testing before and after. Non-standard plumbing, electrical, drainage, permits or finish repair need a site-specific written price.
Some people notice it. Sodium-ion exchange adds sodium in proportion to the hardness removed. If anyone in the house is on a restricted-sodium diet, raise it during the recommendation.
A salt-free conditioner may reduce how well scale sticks, but it does not remove calcium and magnesium. If the goal is genuinely soft water, that distinction is the whole decision.
It depends on the final system size and where the main line, drain and power are. The visit confirms the fit before anything is scheduled.
We take a hardness reading at the tap, explain where it falls on the USGS scale, look at the installation point, and prepare a recommendation. What happens next is your call.

We take a hardness reading at a tap in your house, show you where it lands, and look at the installation point. Free, and no system decision is asked for at the visit.
A local measurement, not an estimate off a state map.
Where it falls, and what it means for sizing a system.
Only if softening is worth it. Otherwise we say that instead.
A hardness test is not a drinking-water safety or contaminant test. Health concerns need an accredited laboratory.
